What this agreement does
A feature agreement covers a guest appearance on someone else's release. It sets the fee or split, how the feature is credited, whether the guest's own label or distributor needs to approve, and what promotion the guest agrees to.
Features are the deals most often done on trust and most often disputed once a track performs.
When a label uses it
- An artist outside your roster appears on one of your releases.
- A guest is taking a share of the recording revenue instead of, or as well as, a fee.
- The guest is signed elsewhere and third-party clearance is needed.
Key clauses explained
Split or fee
Whether the feature is bought out for a fee, takes a percentage of net receipts, or both — and whether that share is of the master, the composition, or each.
Third-party clearance
A guest signed to another label usually cannot clear themselves. The template flags where that consent belongs.
Credit and metadata
Exact billing — 'feat.' versus a co-lead credit — and how it appears in DSP metadata, which affects who the streams are attributed to.
Promotion obligations
What the guest agrees to post or perform, if anything.
Explanations only — the drafted clauses themselves are inside the app.
Common mistakes
- Agreeing a split verbally and only writing it down after the track charts.
- Crediting a feature as a co-lead artist by accident and diluting attribution.
- Ignoring the guest's existing exclusivity obligations to another label.
